What it Takes to Work in Fashion

High-energy fashion shows, shopping for clients, curating creative content for an online fashion magazine and picking out the hottest apparel to be sold in stores sounds uber glamorous. Let me be real with you for a second, it's not. Sure, there are perks to working in fashion and studying it religiously, but outsiders paint a picture that isn't what it seems. There are so many components that make up the fashion world. There's, buying, design, product development, visual merchandising, e-commerce, PR, journalism, social media, wholesale and many more careers you wouldn't even think existed. I've been a fashion merchandising student at the University of North Texas for a couple of years now and my experience has been enthralling, dreamy and confusing all at once. What I can tell you, is that it has been the most rewarding experience of my young adult life. Here are some raw incites to inhale if you want to go into fashion:

1. Hustle
My college years have been spent working retail at Nordstrom, spending summers working in showrooms at Dallas Market Center, completing three internships and volunteering my little time leftover to helping at fashion events and dressing fashion shows. Now, I know this sounds like an insane amount of random things, but I wouldn't have had the opportunities offered to me without the extra work. If you truly want to be in this industry, you have to work. Even when you think you've done enough, do more. Like Mark Cuban says, "Work like there is someone working 24 hours a day to take it away from you." Fashion is the most cut-throat industry, and if you're not ready to fight for where you want to be, you'll just end up a sad store manager. Not that there's anything wrong with store managers, but if you have a passion for brand and creative culture, working retail will just not do.

2. Networking
If you're a shy little butterfly, fashion is not for you. Relationships are key in the fashion industry and knowing certain people can get you far. One of my favorite tools for networking is my LinkedIn. When I was in high school, my mom raved about this new site where it's basically your digital resume and employers can view and connect with you. She told me how huge it was going to be within the next few years, especially while I was in college. I didn't really believe all the hype she spoke about it, but I made an account anyway. Over the years I've tweaked and grown my page to be a recruiter's dream in my eyes. I'm not saying this to brag, but I am so glad my mom made me get a head start in this important career tool. Also, don't listen to the misconception that adding strangers on LinkedIn is the worst, it's not. Add the CEO's and top executives at the companies you want to work for, send messages to people who have the dream job you want. I promise, this strategy builds your connections and can lead to jobs, internships or coffee meet-ups with potential employers. Just remember, keep your messages professional, sincere and not thirsty.
3. Fashion Events
The gowns, the parties, the runway and the pulsing music is oh so dreamy. However, if you actually work in fashion, you're most likely behind the scenes sweating and running around trying to get models into their next looks in 30 seconds. The show depends on you, so you can't screw it up. Most of the fashion events I've attended consisted of me backstage or pulling looks for a show. When I wasn't working these "glamorous" events, I still networked at them and made sure I represented myself well.
4. Social Media
You may think sending tweets and Insta-gramming your daily outfit is just the norm, but social media can be used to build your personal brand. When you go out seeking your dream job or maybe an internship, companies will question, "What's so special about this person? Oh, they have a passion for fashion, wow," followed by intense eye-rolling as they dump your resume in the trash. Through social media, create content that would stand out to anyone. Show your style on Instagram, but don't be basic. Your style should represent your individual appeal and not follow what the mainstream says is cool. That's a fashionista no-no. Use the platforms as a tool to connect with brands and educate yourself on every celebrity, brand collaboration and designer out there. Everything is digital and you should be too.
5. Dress Up
Whether you are a fashion student or just aspiring to work in fashion, always, and I mean always dress up. People should be able to tell if you work in fashion just by looking at you. I've said this before and I'll say it again, it makes me cringe whenever I see fashion students dress like bums for class. I know, you don't always have the time or energy to put in effort every single day, but at-least try. How is anyone going to know you have killer style if you dress sloppy? Especially when guest speakers come to recruit or give a presentation.Your outfit needs to be on point, I am so serious. As a college student, I know it's a lot of work to put looks together, but you have to make time for it.
6. Education
The last ingredient to making it in fashion is education. I'm not simply talking about a four-year degree, although as an undergrad student I believe it is important. Some big companies will require a bachelor's degree, but it just depends. My fashion classes have been somewhat helpful, such as my buying class where I learned all the math involved in buying products for stores. However, most of my industry knowledge has come from internships, working in wholesale, meeting people and working retail jobs. You have to know your customer, which is why working in retail in the beginning is crucial. As far as GPA is concerned, don't freak out if yours isn't up to par, or even what companies are requiring. School is important, but companies are much more willing to hire someone who went to school full-time, worked and did extra non-paid work and internships, versus a student who only made straight A's and did minimal work. Take me for example, my GPA is not so hot, but that's OK. My accomplishments in other areas shine brighter than the few C's I've acquired. Honestly, the only companies that truly care about GPA are old school. Big brands want candidates that know what they're doing and are willing to hustle.

Not everyone is meant for this exhausting, but rewarding industry. But if you are willing to start at the bottom and claw your way up, then fashion is meant for you. You absolutely cannot go into fashion if you "love to shop." It doesn't work that way. So dress up, show up and slay.

Get your nails done, get a blow-out and head to your favorite spa, boutique or fancy lunch spot. Today is 'Treat Yo Self Tuesday.' You are constantly busting your butt to please others, but today you get to give yourself some loving. My generation, Gen Y, also known as the "ADD Generation", is going non-stop. We work our selves to death, stress over everything and have the need to become extraordinary. Our drive to achieve our goals exceeds beyond just our education. Some of us are workaholics, working two to three jobs during school, or even after. While this is an amazing thing, we also need to take time to un-wind every so often. The independency that has been planted inside us from a young age, is the reason behind our motivated selves. I appreciate the fact that I have to be independent and take care of things myself, but sometimes this diva needs a break. To escape the pressures of life, I like to indulge in a nice lunch and grazing the racks in my favorite boutiques. I do not necessarily need to be with anyone, I can enjoy doing these things by myself. I think everyone should be able to do that. Some people believe you need to have people around you all the time, but it is equally as important to be content being alone at times. It gives you the opportunity to reflect on yourself, re-group and get your life together in the way you want it. Happiness can only come within, and not be something you expect from someone else to provide. When I reserve these relaxing days for myself, I like to look fabulous doing so. For today's look, I threw on my new favorite pink, chiffon Ted Baker blouse with Houndstooth shorts. This outfit makes me feel glamorous and powerful. Every woman needs an outfit like that in her wardrobe. While you are on your hustle penciling in appointments, just remember to schedule that relaxing day in your Kate Spade planner that you need to take.

Get My Look!

After a long day of shooting for the blog, I threw on a t-shirt and shorts, tied my hair up and called it a day, so I thought. My poor honey had to suffer through nine outfit changes, the miserable heat and the weekend crowd at West Village. When I say "Honey," I am referring to my amazing boyfriend and photographer. He had to capture every look in the matter of four hours. When we arrived to his Dallas apartment, we realized we forgot to shoot one look. Instead of complaining like babies, we seized the opportunity to view the amazing scene of the Dallas Skyline that took our breath away. The scene represented everything I was working so hard for. Success, major corporations, pretty real estate and accomplished careers. I get the most inspiration when I visit Uptown Dallas. The vibe there is just exuding with hard work and accomplishments. To me, this outfit represents a taste of Dallas. With a stunning pair of electric blue heels, I can achieve anything. They empower me and make me strut with confidence. The main idea I want to express is, do not let your past define your future. This is such a cliché, but it applies to my life in every way possible. Everyone goes through their own rollercoaster ride, but it is how you pick yourself up after you fall that determines where you will go. Make your goals a reality and never doubt your abilities, based on your surroundings in which you cannot control. Go and prosper.

Feeling like Laura Ingalls and casually biking around Uptown Dallas on my super chic vintage bike, is what I live for. Sike. I do not own a bike, nor do I aspire to become a farm girl. This frilly, peasant dress by Free People caught my eye on the sale rack at my work. For only $30 I just had to have it. Now, of course I can be an impulse shopper, but how can you pass up a cheap Free People garment? You can't. The floral printed baby-doll dress is ideal for casual brunch dates, or a weekend in West Village. The fabric is super breezy for summer and feels amazing. It looks great paired with gold wedges and simple gold jewelry pieces. The neckline consists of layered ruffles to give it that 70's vibe. If you dress to be unique, this would be an ideal piece for your diverse closet. My shoes are Kate Spade, in which I acquired a couple years ago from my aunt's bff. I have been obsessed with them ever since. If you enjoy the Little House on the Prairie look, this dress will give you life.

Ruffles are the most adorable creation on this planet, thus, you need them. Specifically, you need them attached to your clothing in the right places. What once was a basic, chiffon romper, has now been transformed in to the ultimate glamazon ensemble. People often associate ruffled clothing with southern gals, but surprise! I found this beauty on the streets of Huntington Beach, California. I guess Cali girls can get down with the frills too. As I mentioned in my last post, I took a trip to Irvine, California during spring break and found many souvenirs, aka clothing to add to my already bursting closet. This romper is one of those fabulous finds I purchased at the beach. The fabric is so light and comfy, the fit isn't too tight and shows off all the right assets. When I tried this fun little number on, there were four other amazing colors. Obviously, being the most un-decided human on the planet, it took me forever to chose this bold summer color. I am so glad I picked the fuschia because it rakes in all the compliments. My closet now consists of three long-sleeve rompers, but this one definitely takes the cake. To compliment the ruffled romper, I chose bright accessories to accompany my festive look. Anyone can pull off this sizzling summer shade, seriously.

Vacations bring excitement, thrill, relaxation and headaches. From packing everything you have in your closet to go on a six day life stress cleanse, knowing what to pack is crucial. My favorite part about vacations are the shopping trips. I try to pack light, knowing I will be spending most of my getaway time scouring the racks of beach-y boutiques and H&Ms hoping to find unique merchandise that is only sold at that location. It's like something inside me thinks just because I got this boxy crop top in a California H&M, makes it super different than what I would've found back in Texas. Although the buyers have to choose merchandise according to each location, the products are very similar at every store. Even though I acknowledge this, I still fall victim to it every time. Recently I ventured on a week long fabulous Spring Break trip to Irvine, California with my best friend. For those un-familiar with Cali, Irvine is in Orange County. Since my bestie and I are polar opposites, she packed t-shirts and Nike shorts, while I filled two leopard duffle bags with my most glam outfits. I have to look fashionable everywhere I go, just incase a fashion executive wants to offer me a glamorous internship. I packed my new tribal skort, freshly bought nude sandals, high-wasted shorties and baby doll dresses. Oh, and most importantly, my ASOS high-wasted swimsuits. Through the duration of my trip, I managed to find shops on every beach and visited at least two shopping centers filled with danger for my bank account. I can say proudly, that I made some fabulous purchases and I regret none of them. The most essential items I bought were this linen tank pictured above and my $7 distressed jeans from H&M. I literally wear them every week. Find your essentials and take care of them. Happy vacationing, dolls!

Day to Night Sleek in Pink

Take this easy fashion infused outfit from daytime chic, to night-time chic by adding a few accessories. The combination of the jet black, snakeskin skinny jeans and the pop of pink chiffon blouse is the perfect edgy/feminine ensemble. These Seven For All Mankind black skinny jeans are my favorite pair of pants I have ever owned. Typically, I prefer a dress, skirt or breezy shorts to cover my body, but I literally wear these all the time. Seriously. I am obsessed with the edgy vibe they exude. Did I forget to mention I scored these babies for only $5 at Nordstrom Rack? Like, that's un-heard of. Another deal I managed to get my hands on was the pink chiffon piece, which only cost $16. I feel like the queen of bargains considering how little I was able to spend on this look. The daytime outfit can easily be transformed to a classy, modest but sleek look. Round up your gal pals and grab some cocktails, or be the chicest office queen at your next business meeting. Add a crisp, white blazer, drop earrings, a bright clutch and swap the sneakers for a fancy pair of studded heels. Command all eyes no matter where you display this look.

Basking in Baby Blue

The Look: Pale blue baby-doll dress- Accents Boutique, Black leather jacket- Nordstrom, Leopard wedges- Aldo Shoes, Earrings- kjewelista.com

Dare to pair an edgy, leather biker jacket with a sweet, romantic baby doll dress. This look is my go-to GNO ensemble, perfect for a night out with your home-girls. My city chic outfit  brings out my inner downtown diva, and is Instagram approved. I purchased this fabulous, angelic dress from Accents Boutique before my trip to Cali. Although my beachy tan is fading, this dress looks fabulous on anyone, especially with a good steam. I still have leather fever from Fall 2015, so I say it is perfectly fine to get the most wear out of it while it's still breezy outside. I literally wear this jacket every week, it goes with everything and black is classic. The wedges were bought a couple years ago from a closing Aldo store, for only $20. I couldn't resist, even though my wallet was begging for mercy. The earrings were derived from my fellow merchandising student's e-commerce business, which I managed to score for just $5.00. This outfit is a win in my book.

Prints, Purple and Publications

                          (Photography by: Bruce LaMotte)

The Look: Grid print crop top- JCPenney, Fuschia pencil skirt- JCPenney, Studded Valentino inspired heels- Cicihot.com, Aqua studs- Francesca's Collections, Beaded black necklace- Charming Charlie, Circle shades- Dallas Market Center

Pull out all the stops in this purple pencil skirt, paired with a printed crop top. The right amount of color, print and rock star accessories, create the most glam, office, street style look. That's a thing right? If not, I'm just creating imaginary ideals in my brain. I envision this office friendly "stop them in their tracks" outfit, to be worn by a fearless  fashionista. She embodies confidence, femininity and personal style. In my head, I would wear this to a meeting with my Editor in Chief at Elle Magazine. I would bring my editorial and feature story ideas to her, she would reject them, make me re-write the entire thing and I would love every minute of it. Now, I am just daydreaming here, but maybe my future fashion career will entail some form of publications, who knows. I always secretly knew there was a reason I drowned myself in deadlines when I was an Opinion Editor for my high school newspaper. My advisor back then, Carol Richtsmeier, "Mrs. Ritchie" as we called her, was like Miranda Priestly in the Devil Wears Prada if you can imagine. Every column I wrote, was re-written and edited at least ten times. She even referred to the newspaper staff as "stupid," which I secretly loved. Thanks to Ritchie, my love for writing and publications has flourished intensely.

Cozy and Craving Spring

The Look: Hot pink Romeo + Juliet sweater-Nordstrom Rack, High-waist black skater skirt- Francesca's Collections, Tights- Francesca's Collections, Grey and black plaid infinity scarf- Nordstrom Rack, Layered chain statement necklace- H&M, Aqua studs- Francesca's Collections

Cozy layers and a great bag are all a fashionista really needs to survive until spring. For the days when you feel like wearing sweats and bumming it out, this is the perfect comfy-cozy combination, yet still fashion infused. There is no excuse for dressing like you just rolled out of bed, especially when you have a to-do list as long as mine. Put on your most glam M.A.C lipstick, grab your Kate Spade planner and hustle. Personally, I feel like Superwoman when I throw on my best garments. This outfit is the perfect statement piece. It says, "I'm ready for spring, but I'm not ready to let go of my sweaters just yet."
